The National Museum of Taiwan History held a news event Jan. 14 in Tainan City to unveil major exhibitions set for 2026 and share updates on the progress of its expansion plan.

According to the NMTH, it will continue to uphold its mission of spotlighting society’s collective memories and changing choices throughout time via the organization of shows and exhibits. Leading the charge is “Transition: Taiwanese Women on the Move,” its first major exhibit themed around women since 2012. The museum added that it opened Dec. 23, 2025, and will run through Aug. 30.

With the support of more than 60 entities at home and abroad, “Transition” lays out the life journeys of 16 women over the past century to spotlight how they navigated societal constraints as they forged paths toward boundless freedom, the NMTH said.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the Asian Games this year, the museum will stage a special exhibition from April 21 to Oct. 18 to document Taiwan’s participation at the regional competition over the years, with a focus on the life of athletes and the cultural significance of sporting events to Taiwanese society.

The NMTH also announced an exhibit on the sea goddess Mazu that includes artifacts from temples around Taiwan, as well as seven items from the collection of the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands. Another highlighted exhibit will focus on the development of mountaineering in Taiwan over the past century and bring attention to mountain and forestry issues.

The museum said the aim of the expansion is to make it both a public facility for Taiwan and a museum for the world. The plan prioritizes new collection and exhibition space in a bid to enhance exchanges with the world, increase contemporary collections, and promote cultural technology and tourism, the NMTH added.
